I PAINT THE CITY AS A LIFELONG LONDONER. MY PRACTICE FOCUSES IN ON THE LAYERS OF THE CITY; THE GLASS SURFACES THAT PIERCE THE SURFACE TO SHAPE THE SKYLINE; THE UNDERGROUND, LONDON'S IDIOSYNCRATIC TRANSPORT NETWORK, AS DENSE AS A BEEHIVE IN SOME PLACES, BURIED AND FORGOTTEN IN OTHERS; THE DARK, INVISIBLE CORNERS OF THE CAPITAL; THE NIGHTLIFE AND MUSIC SCENE FOR WHICH LONDON IS FAMED; AND THE THAMES, LONDON'S VENA CAVA, FROM WHICH THE CITY SPRANG 1000 YEARS AGO.

london under london - the story of a changing city and a constant river

My work explores the tension and relationship between modern architecture and the natural environment. The way that glass towers reflect and change the city they represent, rivers nurture life and industry and rigid mechanical silhouettes reshape the landscape they’re part of. I paint the city at night and at sunset, when its colours deepen, street lights pierce the darkness, and the buildings come out to play, recast under the cover of night as gleaming giants, vertical patterns of light, dressed in the electric glow of the vacant floors within. It’s a study of the city I have loved and grown up in, ever-changing, the battleground for a struggle between the old, the new and the always-there.
